The 2nd alumni conference of the DAAD African Centres of Excellence (COEs) took place in Akosombo, Ghana, over a 3-day period (6th – 9th November 2018). The conference, hosted by the Ghanaian-German Centre for Development Studies (IGAN), focused on the theme: ‘Sustainable Development in Africa: The Role of Science and Education.’ This theme was chosen as a bridge for the diverse disciplines and knowledge generation that characterise the many facets of sustainability being addressed by research capacity in the various Centres. The conference was well attended by 42 alumni and coordinators of the centres of African Excellence. In addition to providing an avenue for discussion on research, the conference also offered a unique platform for members to discuss ideas on how they could harness resources and energy for the establishment and growth of a distinguished African Excellence Network. The African Excellence Network gratefully acknowledges the immense sponsorship and support from the DAAD for the organization of the conference and for the opportunity given to engage alumni in dialogue on the formation and activities of the proposed network. AEN is also grateful to the Director, coordinators, and administrative staff of ISSER (Institute for Statistical, Social and Economic Research, University of Ghana) and ZEF (Center for Development Research, University of Bonn).
